Benfica’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League were dealt an almost fatal blow as they were defeated 2-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Rui Vitória has named 22 players in his preliminary squad for Matchweek 4 of the UEFA Champions League. André Almeida and Luisão are both suspended, so Eliseu, Douglas and Jardel have been brought in to bolster Benfica's defensive options.

Filip Krovinović is not registered for European competition, and is replaced by Rafa Silva, who returns to the squad after an absence of three games. Bruno Varela is also included after three matches in the wilderness.

Tuesday night's game at Old Trafford begins at 19:45 local time, and will be officiated by Lithuanian referee Gediminas Mažeika.

Benfica’s miserable run in the UEFA Champions League continued as they were defeated 1-0 by former manager José Mourinho’s Manchester United side at the Estádio da Luz on Wednesday night.




Squad List: Benfica x Manchester United

With the exception of André Almeida (suspended) and Filip Krovinović (ineligible), Rui Vitória has had the luxury of a full-strength squad to pick from for the visit of Manchester United.

Lisandro López is back in favour after a lengthy absence, but Jardel and Rafa Silva have been left out by choice. Bruno Varela has been dropped, and is replaced by the fit-again Júlio César. Eliseu has recovered from a thigh strain, while Jonas has overcome his back complaint.

Andreas Samaris is also included, as his suspension only applies to domestic matches. Andrija Živković and Eduardo Salvio return to the fold, with Branimir Kalaica and Martin Chrien making way.

Wednesday's match at the Estádio da Luz begins at 19:45 local time, and will be officiated by German referee Felix Zwayer.

Benfica’s disappointing start to their UEFA Champions League campaign continued as they were thrashed 5-0 by Group A opponents Basel at St. Jakob-Park on Wednesday night.

Benfica have taken 21 players to Switzerland for Matchweek 2 of the UEFA Champions League. The big news is the addition of 18-year-old goalkeeper Mile Svilar, and the return of of Eduardo Salvio after a sprained ankle.

Eliseu is included after being left out against Paços de Ferreira, but Lisandro López and Douglas remain out of favour. Filip Krovinović is unavailable, as he was not registered for European competition. Diogo Gonçalves has been dropped.

Wednesday's match at St. Jakob-Park gets underway at 19:45 UK and Portuguese time, and will be officiated by Scottish referee Craig Thomson.

Benfica's 2017/18 UEFA Champions League campaign got off to a disappointing start as they were defeated 2-1 by Group A rivals CSKA Moscow at the Estádio da Luz.

Rui Vitória has named a 20-man preliminary squad for Tuesday's Champions League curtain-raiser against CSKA Moscow. Jardel (right thigh) and Ljubomir Fejsa (right leg) are both unavailable, while Jonas is not certain to start due to a left knee problem.

João Carvalho replaces Filip Krovinović, who has not been registered for the Champions League. Martin Chrien and Chris Willock are also ineligible. Mile Svilar, Douglas and Diogo Gonçalves have been registered, but were not selected on this occasion.

Champions League draw yields reunion with Mourinho, Lindelöf and Matić

Benfica’s 2017/18 UEFA Champions League opponents have been revealed after the group stage draw was held in Monaco on Thursday. The Encarnados were drawn in Group A alongside three-time European Cup winners and last season’s Europa League victors Manchester United, Swiss champions FC Basel, and Russian Premier League runners-up CSKA Moscow.




Vitória, Semedo and Pizzi dissect Dortmund defeat

Benfica exited the Champions League at the round of 16 stage on Wednesday night, with a 4-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion. The home side took just four minutes to cancel out the Eagles' first leg advantage, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rose to meet Christian Pulisic's flick-on from an Ousmane Dembélé corner. After a nervy opening, Benfica held their own for the remainder of the first half, and Dembélé was incredibly lucky to avoid a second yellow card for a late challenge on Eliseu.
