Benfica's 2017/18 UEFA Champions League campaign got off to a disappointing start as they were defeated 2-1 by Group A rivals CSKA Moscow at the Estádio da Luz.

Rui Vitória has named a 20-man preliminary squad for Tuesday's Champions League curtain-raiser against CSKA Moscow. Jardel (right thigh) and Ljubomir Fejsa (right leg) are both unavailable, while Jonas is not certain to start due to a left knee problem.

João Carvalho replaces Filip Krovinović, who has not been registered for the Champions League. Martin Chrien and Chris Willock are also ineligible. Mile Svilar, Douglas and Diogo Gonçalves have been registered, but were not selected on this occasion.

Tuesday's game at the Estádio da Luz gets underway at 19:45 local time, and will be officiated by Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco.

Benfica’s 2017/18 UEFA Champions League opponents have been revealed after the group stage draw was held in Monaco on Thursday. The Encarnados were drawn in Group A alongside three-time European Cup winners and last season’s Europa League victors Manchester United, Swiss champions FC Basel, and Russian Premier League runners-up CSKA Moscow.

Benfica exited the Champions League at the round of 16 stage on Wednesday night, with a 4-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion. The home side took just four minutes to cancel out the Eagles' first leg advantage, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rose to meet Christian Pulisic's flick-on from an Ousmane Dembélé corner. After a nervy opening, Benfica held their own for the remainder of the first half, and Dembélé was incredibly lucky to avoid a second yellow card for a late challenge on Eliseu.




Vitória and Samaris preview Dortmund showdown

Benfica play Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion tonight, with a place in the Champions League quarter-finals on offer to the aggregate victor. Benfica have a 1-0 lead to defend from the first leg, but Dortmund are in sparkling form, having defeated Bayer Leverkusen 6-2 in the Bundesliga on Saturday. In his pre-match press conference, Rui Vitória was asked whether his tactical approach would differ at all from the teams’ previous meeting.

Benfica have taken 22 players to Germany for the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie with Borussia Dortmund. Ljubomir Fejsa has failed to recover from his left ankle sprain, dealing a massive blow to the Eagles' hopes. By contrast, Filipe Augusto has recovered from his right ankle sprain, some two weeks earlier than expected.

Álex Grimaldo is injured (abdomen) and no longer registered for the Champions League. Andrija Živković could make his Champions League debut for Benfica after serving a one-match European ban. Jonas missed the first leg with a neck injury, but looks set to be involved tomorrow. Nélson Semedo is well-rested after serving a domestic ban at the weekend.

Wednesday's match at the Westfalenstadion is scheduled for 19:45 UK and Portuguese time, and will be officiated by English referee Martin Atkinson.
