| Report: SL Benfica 2 - 2 V. Setúbal - 01 December 2008 |
Benfica found themselves ahead after going down 1-0 at home only to let Setúbal equalize in the dying minutes, and failing to take the first spot.
With Luisão and Nuno Gomes unavailable, Quique opted for a Suazo and Cardozo double with young centre-back Miguel Vítor replacing the Brazilian. Following the Athens carnage Jorge Ribeiro took his place back from David Luiz, and Katsouranis was fit to start his 100th Benfica game acting as the captain.
In respect to Benfica's chance of going top of the league for the first time in over 3 years, it was a poor attendance at the Estádio da Luz, registering less than 26,000.
The first real chance came to Suazo who should have buried the ball when he headed Yebda's cross wide from 5 yards. But it was Vitória de Setúbal who took a shock lead against the run of play. Benfica were caught on the break and Quim's parried save fell straight to Lionel's feet from where it was impossible to miss. Maxi Pereira was too casual and let his man unmarked on the right side.
Within 15 minutes of the second half Benfica overturned the result to their advantage with goals from Katsouranis and Suazo. With still half hour to go, it was important for the home side to put the game beyond doubt, which is exactly what could have happened if it wasn't for a chain of mistakes from the officials who denied Suazo his second and letting Setúbal carry on with 11 men when Sandro should have received the marching orders with a clear second bookable offence.
The inexplicable equalizer came on the dying minutes when Anderson's audacious bicycle kick from outside the area found its way inside the goal, with Quim completely misjudging the dipping ball. Complete silence followed as the fans knew 2 valuable points had been lost once again at the end of the game.
