FC Porto x SL Benfica Squad List - 10 May 2014

With the title wrapped up against Olhanense and with an eye for the Europa League final this week the manager decided to call up 7 youngsters from the Benfica B side.

Varela, João Cancelo, Lindelof, Rúben Pinto, Bernardo Silva, Rui Fonte and Hélder Costa were chosen to make the trip up north with 11 other players from the senior squad.

Enzo, Markovic and Salvio are expected to start as they are all suspended for the final against Sevilla.

No matter the result tonight, Benfica will finish top with their rivals in 3rd place.

The 18 players called up are:

Goalkeepers: Paulo Lopes and Bruno Varela
Defenders: João Cancelo, Steven Vitória, Jardel, André Almeida and Lindelof
Midfielders: Enzo Perez, Djuricic, Rúben Pinto, Bernardo Silva, Salvio, Ivan Cavaleiro and André Gomes
Forwards: Markovic, Funes Mori, Rui Fonte and Hélder Costa

Benfica crowned Liga champions - 20 April 2014

Benfica were crowned Liga Zon Sagres champions of season 2013/14 after beating Olhanense 2-0 in Estádio da Luz, leaving city rivals Sporting 7 points behind with two games left.

This was the club's 33rd Portuguese League and the first with a foreign goalkeeper, both Artur (Brazil) and Jan Oblak (Slovenia) played their part.

Jorge Jesus clinched his second title with Benfica in the 4 years he has been with the club.

Fejsa and Gaitán doubtful for Académica encounter - 22 March 2014

Both Fesja and Gaitán are in doubt for tomorrow's league encounter against Académica.

The midfielders missed the Europa League game at the Luz against Tottenham and will be put under test this evening according to the manager:

"Fejsa and Gaitán have physical problems and were not in the field against Tottenham. Both worked under limitations this week and we will only today if they can play tomorrow or not."

Jesus assumes favourite tag against Académica - 22 March 2014

Jorge Jesus expects Benfica to being strongly to wrap up all 3 points as early as possible.

Académica, managed by ex-footballer Sérgio Conceição, was praised by Benfica's coach who expected a much harder test than the 3-nil win at Coimbra earlier this season.

"We are the strongest team for the individual and collective qualities we possess. especially in our defensive strategies."

"Tomorrow we will play against a team with a young manager, who is destined to be a great coach. I expect a lot of difficulties but we will be ready for them."

"Each game has its own story and we will see a stronger Académica than the first round. Although I hope we can win them easily."

Benfica host Académica tomorrow at the Estádio da Luz at 18:00 GMT.

Benfica legend Eusébio passes away - 05 January 2014

Eusébio da Silva Ferreira passed away this morning at 3:30am due to a cardiorespiratory problem.

Eusébio, a figure known as one of the greatest players ever to grace the game, was 71 and will leave Portuguese and world football in mourning. He sc

He was born in Mozambique in 1942 but went on to play for the Portuguese national team making 64 appearances and scoring 41 goals.

Eusébio represented Benfica for a large part of his footballing career winning the ultimate European Cup in 1962 and the national league ten times, becoming top scorer for 7 seasons.

January league matches confirmed - 30 December 2013

The Portuguese Football League has confirmed Benfica's January domestic league matches against Porto and Marítimo.

Benfica are coincidently hosting both back-to-back league matches in the coming month, and will open the new year's league calendar with Porto at home - set for Sunday 12th January at 16:00.

The «encarnados» will them receive Marítimo exactly a week later on 19th January, but this time at 17:00 in the afternoon.

Both matches will be live on Benfica TV and the timings will favour the supporters who have been backing for earlier games in the Liga Zon Sagres.
