Benfica failed to pass the Sion test in their second game of pre-season, losing 2-1.
It couldn't have been a worse start for Roberto. The newly signed keeper was caught in no man's land and the familiar face in Emile Mpenza slotted past the post. David Luiz couldn't get a block to stop the opener in under 5 minutes.
Benfica were finding difficulties in getting forward and Carlos Martins had an effort from range on the 18th minute, which had the keeper on his toes but was off target.
On the half hour, Kardec cut in from the left and shot but the keeper was equal to it and played it out for a corner. The Brazilian youngster had another chance minutes later, where he found himself one-on-one from the right angle, and again, Vanins got the better of him.
Gaitán and Jara were substituted in the second half and the former had a wonderful run on the left flank which deserved a goal, but his pass was intercepted before it could reach Saviola.
Pablo Aimar got the equalizer when Saviola's shot was parried in from of him just past the hour.
David Luiz went on an extroadinary solo run 10 minutes from time and Benfica were about to go ahead if it wasn't for Vanins and his spectacular save.
The subsequent counter-attack led to the goal which would decide the game. Roberto hesitated in coming forward this time and substitute striker Prejovic proved to be a good bet for the Swiss manager.
The home side were efficient after having less of the ball, and Benfica will rue not converting their efforts on goal, mostly the fault of Vanins.
