Vitória de Guimarães x SL Benfica

Benfica retain the Guimarães Trophy Cup after a game full of goals with Carlos Martins' and Jara's the pick of the match.

The visitors knew a victory would win the trophy after drawing to Groningen 3-3 the night before. The hosts had an extra day off and a stern test was definitely on the cards.

A quick-double fire inside the 10 minutes paved way for an enthralling goal-fest match. Kardec and Saviola were on target to put Benfica well ahead. The Brazilian played the part of the assister for the second and proved to be effective in the air for the first goal.

On the half-hour Guimarães pulled one back from a bizarre contrast from the Benfica keeper. Roberto did extremely well to save a low shot for a corner but it resulted to a goal after the Spaniard failed to make contact on the clearance, and Valdomiro was thankful for the leftovers.

Aimar was substituted before the half after feeling a strain when he tried to keep the ball in play, and successfully crossing for his team mates at a price. The Argentine signalled to the bench and Luís Filipe was on call to take Ruben's starting position at right-back.

Benfica began the second half like the first, scoring 2 early goals with Kardec on strike again. Jara got the fourth in a perfectly executed fasion, Felipe Menezes laid the ball into the path of Benfica's new striker and struck the ball from outside the area to lob Serginho.

Roberto was at the centre of attention once again when Douglas reduced the deficit to 4-2. The ex-Atlético Madrid man didn't make contact with an incoming free-kick and was crushed to the ground watching helplessly. Although on another day, a foul could have easily been given.

The three-goal cushion was restored from a sublime goal by the in-form Carlos Martins. The Portuguese midfielder, left out of the World Cup squad, unsurprisingly went for goal from the hardest of angles near the corner and stunningly hit the inside of the top of the far post.

Already aware of the victory, a lack of concentration left Valdomiro unmarked as Guimarães scored their third and the final of the game in injury time.

Captain Nuno Gomes collected the award and Kardec won the golden-boot with three goals.

Benfica's next game is against French side AS Monaco, Champions League finalists in 2004, for the official presentation to the fans at the Estádio da Luz, Saturday 24th July at 20:15 local time. A game which Benfica TV have exclusive rights to.
