Benfica sign Eduardo Salvio - 01 August 2012 |
Benfica have officially announced the signing of Argentina International winger Eduardo 'Toto' Salvio from Atlético Madrid until 2017.
The 22-year-old returns to a well known home after spending season 2010/11 on loan from the Spanish club. Salvio instantly became a fan favourite with his performances in the Liga and Europa League with Benfica, winning the Portuguese League Cup in the process. Although his loan move was cut short at the time after suffering an injury in the quarter-finals against PSV in Eindhoven.
The two-time Europa League winner with Atlético Madrid cost Benfica approximately 13m EUR, including the percentage already owned by the Lisbon club and the remaining transfer fee owed by the Spanish club for Simão Sabrosa's transfer to the neighbouring capital in 2007.
Speaking to Benfica TV the player spoke of his joy on returning to the club.
"I feel very happy and grateful for Benfica's effort to bring me. I am happy to be back at this 'house' and to be with people who have been important in my career, I had a lot of desire to return."
"I don't know how to explain [the special relationship with fans], but I feel happy that the fans like me, just as I like them, they are very special. Even when I was in Atlético Madrid the continued to 'follow' me on Twitter.
"I want to play in the Champions League, win titles, and be in a club with the greatness of Benfica. My objective is to continue to improve as a player and be useful to the team."
"Whenever I could I would follow Benfica games and the last one I saw was against Real Madrid [Eusébio Cup] and I was happy with the victory."
Salvio's contract has been stamped with a 60m EUR release fee clause.
