| Eusébio Cup 2008 - 01 August 2008 |
The newly created Eusébio Cup was officially presented yesterday by Benfica's chairman Luis Filipe Vieira, sporting director Rui Costa, manager Quique Flores, and the «King» himself Eusébio da Silva Ferreira.
This annual tournament will be played at the Estádio da Luz, and this year, only Inter Milan will join the hosts, and preparations are already under way to increase the amount of teams to 4 from next year.
Eusébio didn't hide his emotions for being honoured once more by Benfica:
"It is already an honour having your statue outside the Luz, and now there is a competition with my name. I want to live a long life, but I know this tribute will live forever."
"I think Internazionale was a good choice. I have played against them and knew of their interest in signing me back in the day. Today, it is a club coached by a Portuguese (José Mourinho) and they also have Figo and Pelé. I hope it will be a great game and that the cup will stay at home, because this is the first edition and has a lot of value."
LF Vieira and Rui Costa paid tribute to the legendary player for staying and representing Benfica all these years. The ex-Benfica «number 10» showed his gratitude to the man who influenced him to stay at Benfica.
"I would like to thank him for representing Benfica like no man could in Portugal. It was him who made me stay in Benfica as a kid and it is with joy to be here during the first edition of this Cup. I hope it will be a wonderful day."
Rui Costa and Quique Flores admitted that the Benfica team will be near their best come 15th August. The manager is hoping for a good atmosphere during this event.
"The fans are aware that Benfica are undergoing a new cycle. We will field the best available team and one that can represent Benfica what it stands for."
"I wish for a good atmosphere and something that will reflect throughout the season."
