Benfica suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Porto at the Estádio do Dragão tonight. In a predictably tight and tense encounter, Benfica battled bravely before succumbing to André André's late winner with just minutes left on the clock.
Rui Vitória's side shaded the first half proceedings, with headers from Mitroglou and Luisão calling Iker Casillas into action. Porto had plenty of possession but created little in the way of clear-cut chances.
The home side produced a far more commanding second half performance. Cameroonian striker Vincent Aboubakar hit the post with a header and later found the side netting after rounding Júlio César.
Benfica occasionally threatened on the break, with Mitroglou coming close from a Gonçalo Guedes cross.
Porto finally broke Benfica's resistance in the closing stages, when André André slotted home after latching on to Silvestre Varela's neat backheel.
On the balance of play, Porto were perhaps deserving of their victory, but Benfiquistas will feel aggrieved that serious fouls by Maicon and Maxi Pereira went unpunished by referee Artur Soares Dias.
