Six players have left the club over the past week, as Benfica continue to mould their squad for the forthcoming season. Nuno Santos, Vitali Lystsov and Daniel Candeias have been sent out on loan, while Bruno Varela, Fábio Cardoso and Pedro Rebocho have all been sold. Victor Andrade is also close to the exit door.
Winger Nuno Santos joins Vitória de Setúbal on a season-long loan deal. The 21-year old was on the fringes of Rui Vitória's squad last season, but suffered a major setback when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligaments against Porto B in December. The youngster will now look to prove his fitness and showcase his talent in the Liga NOS.
Vitória FC have also recruited Bruno Varela and Fábio Cardoso on a permanent basis. 6'3" goalkeeper Varela has agreed a 5-year contract with Benfica's near-neighbours. The 21-year old will be desperate to prove himself, having made just a single appearance on loan at Valladolid last season. Varela has played 85 games for Benfica B, and is a regular for Portugal under-21s, but has found his route to the first team blocked by Júlio César and Ederson.
22-year old centre-back Fábio Cardoso has signed a 4-year deal with José Couceiro's side. Cardoso has represented Benfica B on 55 occasions, scoring 3 goals. The former Portugal under-20 international has spent the past 18 months on loan at Paços de Ferreira, where he was a first team regular, playing 43 games.
The transfers of Santos, Varela and Cardoso are thought to have been negotiated as part of the deal which saw Vitória midfielder André Horta sign for Benfica back in June. The Eagles are believed to have insisted on buy-back clauses for Varela and Cardoso, although neither club has confirmed this.
Pedro Rebocho is another Portuguese youngster to have departed Benfica this month. The 21-year old left-back moves to Moreirense, who finished 12th in the Liga NOS last season. Rebocho has penned a three-year contract with the Northern outfit. Like Nuno Santos, Rebocho sustained a serious injury last season, breaking his leg against Varzim in February. The Portuguese under-20 international departs having played 60 games for Benfica B.
Russian defender Vitali Lystsov has been loaned to Tondela for the 2016/17 season. The towering 6'4" centre-back has 41 games for Benfica B under his belt, and has featured 6 times for Russia under-21s. The 20-year old began his career with Lokomotiv Moscow, and will now look to prove himself in the Liga NOS, under the management of ex-Benfica stalwart Petit.
A more senior player deemed surplus to requirements is Portuguese winger Daniel Candeias. The 28-year old arrived at the Estádio da Luz in July 2014 from Nacional da Madeira, but has yet to make his Benfica debut. He joins Turkish club Alanyaspor on a season-long loan deal; his fourth loan move after spells at Nürnberg, Granada and Metz. Candeias and his agent were at Istanbul's Ataturk airport during the recent terrorist attack, but were both fortunate to avoid injury.
Brazilian winger Victor Andrade is currently training with 1860 Munich, who share the Allianz Arena with Bayern. Andrade's loan move should be rubber-stamped in the coming days. Moroccan misfit Adel Taarabt also flew out for talks with the German second division side, but 1860's Sporting Director Thomas Eichin announced today that the deal had collapsed.
