Vitória expecting a "physical and tactical" battle with Estoril

Benfica make the short trip to the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota on Tuesday night for the first leg of their Portuguese cup semi-final with Estoril. The Canaries’ Spanish coach Pedro Gómez Carmona was appointed in December, and has now been at the helm for 12 matches. His first eight games yielded six defeats, but Rui Vitória has seen signs of improvement in recent weeks.

Squad List: Estoril x Benfica

Rui Vitória has made just one change to his squad ahead of Tuesday night's Portuguese cup clash with Estoril. Luka Jović has been dropped, while January signing Marcelo Hermes has been included to provide another option at left-back.

Álex Grimaldo (abdomen) and Ljubomir Fejsa (ankle) are still sidelined, while André Horta and Lisandro López have been overlooked once again. Jonas is set to make his 100th appearance for the Eagles.

Tuesday's match at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota begins at 20:15 local time.

Goalkeepers: Ederson and Júlio César

Defenders: Luisão, Jardel, André Almeida, Nélson Semedo, Lindelöf, Eliseu and Hermes

Benfica kept their title bid on track with an entertaining 3-1 victory over Chaves at the Estádio da Luz on Friday night. Kostas Mitroglou opened the scoring with a well-placed header from a Nélson Semedo cross, but the visitors equalised shortly before the interval thanks to a delightful long-range curler from Belarusian midfielder Bressan.

January transfer window departures: Part II

Besides the lucrative sales of Gonçalo Guedes and Hélder Costa, the signings of Filipe Augusto and Pedro Pereira, and the departure of Adel Taarabt to Genoa, there was plenty more transfer activity at Benfica during January. The majority of these transactions were outgoing loan deals. In the second of this two-part feature, we run through the foreign players that departed.

Highlights: Benfica 3 - 1 Chaves

Vitória wary of Chaves' counter-attacking capabilities

Rui Vitória

Benfica host newly-promoted Chaves at the Estádio da Luz on Friday night. Their recently-appointed coach Ricardo Soares has continued the excellent work of his predecessor Jorge Simão, and the visitors now sit seventh in the Liga NOS, boasting the fourth best defensive record in the competition. Rui Vitória began his pre-match press conference by paying tribute to the northern outfit.

Squad List: Benfica x Chaves

Ljubomir Fejsa is unavailable for the visit of Chaves after spraining his left ankle. Álex Grimaldo is the only other player currently receiving treatment, as he continues to recuperate from abdominal surgery.

Ederson returns after serving his one-match suspension against Braga. Jonas has recovered from his neck injury, while Luka Jović has also been selected after scoring for Benfica B last weekend. Lisandro López and André Horta do not feature, despite not appearing on the official injury list.

Friday's match at the Estádio da Luz gets underway at 21:00 local time.

Goalkeepers: Ederson and Júlio César

Defenders: Luisão, Jardel, André Almeida, Nélson Semedo, Lindelöf and Eliseu

Forwards: Jonas, Jović, Mitroglou and Raúl

Opinion: The lowdown on GD Chaves

Benfica welcome GD Chaves to the Estádio da Luz on Friday night, to kick off Matchweek 23 of the Liga NOS. The Eagles claimed a hard-fought 2-0 victory against the newly-promoted outfit back in September, and will need to be at their best to repeat that result against a team with the fourth best defensive record in the league. Ahead of the match, we chatted with Brandon, creator of the excellent English-language newsfeed @GDChavesWorld.

Vitória: "It was a thrilling match"

Rui Vitória

Sport Lisboa e Benfica and Sporting Clube de Braga faced each other in an exciting match at "The Quarry" on Sunday, with the Eagles overcoming their opponents thanks a superb individual goal from Greek striker Kostas Mitroglou, with just ten minutes left on the clock. The vital 1-0 victory allowed Benfica to reclaim top spot in the Liga NOS, which had been temporarily stolen by rivals FC Porto.
