Benfica B continue their chase for the podium

After last weekend's 4-1 victory against Oliveirense Benfica B travel to SC Covilhã, a team that deserves maximum respect according to manager Hélder Cristóvão.

"SC Covilhã are a great team at home, specially with the characteristics of their narrow pitch which they are accustomed to. They are an aggressive team and take advantage of set pieces, and of course there will be extra motivation on their side as they will be playing Benfica."

"We will have to work hard to bring points back to Lisbon."

Jorge Jesus, world class manager?

Planet Benfica's Chris Santos' thoughts on Benfica manager Jorge Jesus.

For some, he's the Alex Ferguson of Benfica. A long term manager with a clear idea about the style of the football we seek to play and a plan for consistently forming world class players, ready to sell to the highest bidder. To others, he's an arrogant, classless and sometimes clueless manager who has a phobia of young Portuguese talent. What can't be argued is that his time at Benfica has been the most successful period for the club in more than 20 years, with 8 trophies won (2 League titles, 1 Portuguese Cup, 4 League Cups and a Portuguese Super Cup) plus 2 consecutive Europa League finals.

Comfortable win over Vitória de Setúbal with a Lima brace

Benfica repeated the mid-week result against Vitória de Setúbal, this time for the Liga, with a comfortable 3-0 win over Os Sadinos.

Jardel continued where he left off in the Liga and scored the opener with a well headed effort from Pizzi's corner. Lima added the second minutes before the half with a high placed ball from close range, the ball was a cross from Ola John and the dutchman received the benefit of doubt after a shoulder-to-shoulder barge with Pedro Queirós.

Jorge Jesus previews Liga match against V. Setúbal

At the press conference in Seixal this afternoon, Jorge Jesus previewed Sunday's Liga match against Vitória de Setúbal in Estádio da Luz. Both sides met midweek in Lisbon for the League Cup semi-final.

"It's a game where both teams know more of each other. Benfica's objective is always the same, to win. V. Setúbal are an opponent who gave us problems in the first 30 minutes of the last game. We know there will be difficulties but Benfica have a lot of momentum when playing in their stadium."

Samaris praises squad's team spirit

Despite being out of European competitions and the Portuguese Cup, Benfica still have their main objective in sight to retain.

Andreas Samaris welcomed the good run in both league and league cup by praising the team spirit outside the pitch.

"Benfica's force comes from that. We are a family of friends."

"The youngest in the group can joke with the oldest and vice versa. This is very important."

The Greek midfielder who joined the Lisbon side from Olympiakos in the summer was speaking to Benfica TV in the 'Alta Fidelidade' show.

Benfica through to League Cup final!

Benfica beat Vitória de Setúbal convincingly tonight to reach their 6th League Cup final in the history of the competition which began in 2007/08.

The manager kept consistent in his first XI by fielding players with the least amount of playing time with the likes of Lisandro Lopez at centre back and youngster Gonçalo Guedes in the right wing starting.

Ruben Amorim returns to the squad list

Jorge Jesus has listed midfielder Rúben Amorim for tonight's game against Vitória de Setúbal.

Although giving no guarantees that Amorim will be on the bench, it's a step forward for the Portuguese after a 5 month absence on the sidelines after a leg injury at the start of the season at Boavista.

Captain Luisão has not been selected; alongside Maxi Pereira, André Almeida and Gaitán.

Gonçalo Guedes, Benfica's promising youngster, continues to win the manager's vote and could also feature tonight.

The match kicks-off tonight at 19:45 local time.

Benfica share derby spoils

Benfica scored in the last second of the game through defender Jardel and come away from Alvalade with a share of the points against bitter rivals Sporting.

This vital draw keeps Portugal's third best team 7 points away from the leaders.

Despite having no chances on goal during the 90 minutes Jorge Jesus' side showed resilience and experience in keeping Marco Silva's men at bay.

Jorge Jesus was satisfied to leave with a point given the circumstances of the game as both teams cancelled each other out.

Jorge Jesus hopeful for Gaitán

The Argentine playmaker has been sidelined since Benfica's victory over Marítimo in Funchal, however Jorge Jesus is hopeful that he may be able to play a part.

"Gaitán trained today [Friday], he will train tomorrow [Saturday] but I am not certain if he will play. On Sunday we will know for sure. We still have hope.

"With Júlio César injured, Artur is set to take the place between the goalposts and the manager showed his full confidence on the Brazilian keeper.

"Artur is a player with many years in football, with a lot of experience, he isn't a kid."
