| Ola John signs 5 year deal with Benfica - 24 May 2012 |
Benfica confirmed the acquisition of 20 year-old Ola John on the afternoon of 24th May from Dutch Eridivisie side FC Twente.
Benfica's official website announced that both clubs successfully reached a deal, thought to be around €10m, for the services of Dutch under-21 international, who put pen-to-paper on a five year deal with the Lisbon club.
"I am a player with technique and like to get crosses in, I think this was noticed when I played against Benfica. I am quick at dribbling and score goals too. I can play on either side of the wings which can make things difficult for the defense. As for the league there are four or five teams which are stronger than the rest who end up playing with 10 players defending. It's more defensive style than Dutch football."
Ola John's release clause fee has been set to a whopping €45m.
Benfica last faced FC Twente in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League qualifier round where they won 5-3 on aggregate.
Interview to Benfica TV
"It will be fantastic to play for 65,000 fans. I have already played and here and know the atmosphere."
"I know Rui Costa well and since young he has been one of my favourite players. But also Aimar and Cardozo who I observed when I played against them."
"Benfica is a big club and I've always known this. I've seen them in this huge stadium and everyone knows about Benfica, for their great players but also for the club itself. I watched their Champions League games against Manchester United and Basel, but also against Zenit and after Chelsea, where they should have qualified for the better performance. They deserved the quarter-finals and I hope we do better next season."
On manager Jorge Jesus:
"I heard he improves young players. I spoke to Witsel and he only had positive things to say. I am eagerly waiting to speak to him and I hope he supports me."
