Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly known just as Benfica or SLB, are a multi sports club based in Portugal's capital city of Lisbon. Although they compete in a number of different sports they are known mainly for their football team which is historically the most successful in Portugal and one of the "três grandes" or big three clubs in Portugal along with Porto and Sporting.
Aside from football, Benfica competes in basketball, roller hockey, indoor football (known as futsal), volleyball, handball, water polo, rugby, cycling, and athletics.
Benfica has the biggest fan base in Portugal and one of the biggest fan bases in the world with many supporters outside of Portugal in countries like Andorra, Angola, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cape Verde, France, Germany, Guinea-Bissau, Luxembourg, Macao, Switzerland, and United States. Recently Benfica obtained the Guinness world record for having the highest number of club associates, known as Sócios with over 200,000. (As of June 2011, stands at over 230,000.)
The clubs symbol is an eagle which appears on the club emblem over a red and white shield with the acronym of SLB over a football and a bicycle wheel. The eagle, named “Vitória” was the mascot of the club and prior to every home game she wouldfly from side of the stadium to the other before perching on a stand with the clubs symbol on top. From season 2011/12, two new eagles were brought in, named "Gloriosa" and "Vítoria".
The club's motto is “E Pluribus Unum” which is Latin for “out of many, one".
