Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly known just as Benfica or SLB, are a multi sports club based in Portugal's capital city of Lisbon. Although they compete in a number of different sports they are known mainly for their football team which is historically the most successful in Portugal and one of the "três grandes" or big three clubs in Portugal along with Porto and Sporting.

Aside from football, Benfica competes in basketball, roller hockey, indoor football (known as futsal), volleyball, handball, water polo, rugby, cycling, and athletics.

Most of these teams can boast recent domestic successes: the basketball teams have retained the national championships for the past 3 years running while roller hockey, futsal and handball all boast domestic titles in the past 5 years. In terms of European the futsal and basketball both hold major European honours and the athletics team can count Olympic gold medallist Nelson Évora on its books. Football however is where the bulk of Benfica’s focus lies, and despite not regularly competing for European glory in the Champions League, almost beat the odds to overcome Chelsea in the final of the Europa League last year. Football is undoubtedly where Benfica derives its history and prestige from and will continue to do so.

Benfica has the biggest fan base in Portugal and one of the biggest fan bases in the world with many supporters outside of Portugal in countries like Andorra, Angola, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cape Verde, France, Germany, Guinea-Bissau, Luxembourg, Macao, Switzerland, and United States. Recently Benfica obtained the Guinness world record for having the highest number of club associates, known as Sócios with over 200,000. (As of March 2013, stands at over 260,000.)

The clubs symbol is an eagle which appears on the club emblem over a red and white shield with the acronym of SLB over a football and a bicycle wheel. The eagle, named “Vitória” was the mascot of the club and prior to every home game she would fly from side of the stadium to the other before perching on a stand with the clubs symbol on top. From season 2011/12, two new eagles were brought in, named "Gloriosa" and "Vitória".

The club's motto is “E Pluribus Unum” which is Latin for “out of many, one".
